PFAS in stuffed toys are not just a toy problem—they are a textile problem

A new study published in Nature (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41370-026-00946-8) found that commercially available stuffed toys can release PFAS into artificial saliva, suggesting an overlooked exposure pathway for infants and young children.

But the findings point to a much broader issue.

Stuffed toys are largely textile products. Like many garments, carpets, upholstery and other consumer textiles, they are often made from polyester fabrics and synthetic fibres. While these materials do not require PFAS, fluorinated chemicals may be introduced during textile production through water-, stain- or dirt-resistant finishes, coatings, processing aids or other manufacturing steps.

The study found detectable levels of PFAS in all tested toys, with short-chain PFAS—particularly PFHxA—being the dominant compounds. As long-chain PFAS are phased out, these short-chain alternatives are increasingly appearing in consumer products, despite continuing concerns about their persistence and potential health impacts.

The study highlights a challenge that extends far beyond children’s toys.

Today, consumers rarely know which chemicals are present in the textiles they buy. Brands often have only partial visibility into the chemicals used throughout complex global supply chains. Without comprehensive chemical information, it becomes difficult to substitute hazardous substances, ensure safe recycling, or prevent regrettable substitution.

This is why chemical transparency in textiles is becoming increasingly important.

Transparency enables manufacturers to identify and phase out hazardous chemicals, supports compliance with emerging requirements such as the EU’s Digital Product Passport, facilitates safer circularity, and helps protect consumers—especially vulnerable groups such as infants and children.

A truly sustainable textile sector is not only circular and recyclable—it must also be toxic-free. And that starts with knowing which chemicals are in textile products.
